Some four Eurocopter AS-365N Dauphin are in use with the Prefectura Naval Argentina (PNA). Three of them were delivered between 1995, PA-40 (C/N S-6410), PA-41 (C/N S-6412) and PA-42 (C/N S-6418) and 1996 and a fourth, PA-43 (C/N S-6479) was transferred in 2003. These helicopters are land based and belong to the Escuadrilla de Alas Rotativas (EAR) and are mostly used for patrol and SAR duties. All carry an unspecified crane and support for a Spectro SX-16 Night Sun searchlight, which is mounted according to the missions.
PA-40 is reported to have a weather radar while PA-41 is reported to use a search/exploration radar, both of unspecified models. Which are the models of the radars in use? Are they the OMERA ORB-32 or the Bendix RDR 1500 search/exploration radar?
On January 19, 2002, the fishingboat "Ángela Wright" run aground in the midst of a strong tempest, some 11 km from the coastline, by 45 ° 06' South and 66 ° 09' West, in the Golfo San Jorge, close to Punta Médanos. With the help of CASA 212 Aviocar PA-72 and the support of GC 25 "Azopardo" and GC 122 "Lago Mascardi" the Dauphin PA-41 managed to rescue 24 sailors under extreme conditions, as can be seen in the following photograph, which was taken from PA-72.
These helicopters are too large to operated from the decks of the six Mantilla class large patrol boats, to replace the Hughes 369HS, so they operate from land.
On September 5, 2003 the Ministerio de Justicia, Seguridad y Derechos Humanos through the Decisión Administrativa 70/2003 transferred the single Eurocopter AS-365N2 Dauphin (C/N S-6479) of the Policía Federal Argentina (PFA) to the Prefectura Naval Argentina (PNA). This aircraft spent some time in the PFA hangar, but was eventually navalised and equipped for maritime patrol duties, including the addition of a Spectro SX-16 Night Sun searchlight and an uspecified crane. As expected, it did receive the PA-43 serial. In exchange the the PFA received a budget of 20,000,000, local currency, per year for the next five years for the purpose of buying brand new helicopters. The PFA also received the remaining of the budget that was assigned to the PNA with the objective of acquiring a new helicopter, objective which was made impossible by the devaluation of the Argentinean Peso in the last few years. This remaining budget will be used by the PFA to acquire video and communications equipment for their patrol cars.
There are conflicting reports on the C/Ns of these aircraft. For example, PA-40 is reported in the http://www.scramble.nl/ database as being S-6483, former F-WQDH, while it is reported as being S-6410, former F-GHRX, by the http://www.helis.com/ database. Also, PA-41 is reported in the http://www.scramble.nl/ database as being S-6502, former F-WQDM, while it is reported as being S-6412, former F-GHRY, by the http://www.helis.com/ database. Clarification on this matter is requested, even thought since http://www.helis.com/ is an Argentinean site I would tend to trust don Jorge Gazzola, who is its webmaster, and his contacts with this force.
