File Naming Conventions

For this project we are going to follow a certain number of naming conventions to make things easier to track and manage. In particular a number of file name conventions have been specified. For the momment, there are six file name conventions, depending on the type of file.

The six types of files for which a naming convention does exists are:

  1. Generic description pertinent to the whole site
  2. Description of an organisation or of a weapons system
  3. Aircraft photograph
  4. Ship or boat photograph
  5. Equipment photograph
  6. Some other kind of photograph

Generic Description File Naming Convention

The format for a generic description file name would then be:

GenLabel.html

Where:

GenLabel is a label that describes the function of this page in the site. The function has to be generic to the site to fall into this category. This filed is mandatory.

For example, the next generic description files do exist currently:

index.html -- The first page of this site.
Conventions.html -- This page, where the conentions are described.
GenBiblio.html -- The General Bibliography to the site.
Links.html -- The list of WWW links to other sites of interest.
Modifications.html -- The log of all modifications to this site.
News.html -- The list of the important news related to this site's subject
                      matter.

organisation or Weapons System Description File Naming Convention

The format for an organisation, unit or weapons description file name would then be:

CountryLabel[_SvcLabel][_UnitTypeModel].html

Where:

CountryLabel would be the first and most important convention is that all files that are related to a particular country have the ISO-639 two letters code as the first two characters of their name. This component of the file name is mandatory. When it is unique then this file refers to the whole country; i.e. CL.html.

For example we are using the next country labels for the following countries:

AR -- Argentina
BS -- Bahamas
CL -- Chile
HN -- Honduras
PY -- Paraguay

SvcLabel indicate which particular military organisation of the country this particular file refers to. This component of the file name is optional. When there are no more components this means that the file refers to the particular service in general; i.e. AR_ARA.html.

For example we are using the next service labels for the following countries:

AR |----> ARA Armada República Argentina
   |----> EA    Ejército Argentino
   |----> FAA   Fuerza Aérea Argentina
   |----> GNA   Gendarmería Nacional Argentina
   |----> PNA   Prefectura Naval Argentina
   |----> PFA   Policía Federal Argentina

BS |----> DF    Defense Force
   |----> PF    Police Force

CL |----> ACh Armada de Chile
   |----> ECh   Ejército de Chile
   |----> FACh Fuerza Aérea de Chile
   |----> CCh   Carabineros de Chile

   |----> EH    Ejército Hondureño
   |----> FAH   Fuerza Aérea Hondureña

PY |----> APa Armada de Paraguay
   |----> EPa   Ejército Paraguayo
   |----> FAPa  Fuerza Aérea Paraguaya

UnitTypeModel indicate one of three types of documents:

Unit descriptions -- CL_FACh_Grupo9.html
Type of weapons   -- AR_EA_Aircraft.html
Model of weapons  -- HN_FAH_SuperMystere.html

Aircraft Photograph File Naming Convention

The format for an aircraft photograph file name would then be:

CountryLabel_SvcLabel_Model[_Serial][_Sufix][__Photographer].[GraphType]

This component of the file name is mandatory.

For example we are using the next service labels for the following countries:

Serial indicates the serial number of the airframe represented in the photograph. When more than one airframe are present in the photograph then the one most proheminently displayed is used. Examples of serial numbers are 514, 2014 and 1025. When no serial number is known then a single letter is used to indentify this particular photograph, unless this is the only photograph of this particular model. This field is optional.

Sufix is a number that is used to differentiate between multiples photograph of exactly the same airframe. This field is optional.

Photographer indicated the name of the photographer or organisation who took the photograph. Whenever the photographer is unknow this field is Unknown.

GraphType, for the moment, jpg or gif for graphics files.

HTML Coding Conventions

One of the goals of this project is for this Web site to be fully compliant with the latest standards of the Internet and W3C and not to use proprietary tags. For now this Web site has to be HTML 4.0 compliant and it must make use of techniques like the META tags for proper indexing by the search engines of this new medium.

Another important focus is the proper respect of the different languages spoken in the countries of interest. Care has been taken to use the LANG tag whenever a word, name or sentence has to be in a different language than the standard American English (en-US) even if this implies the use of the DIV and SPAN tags just for this particular purpose. Aural browsers should work fine with this Web site. Care for the language should also extend to the use of correct spelling but I am sure that errors must abound since English is not my native language, not even my second language. I will endeavour to correct them when I find them or when people kindly notify me of them.

Other Conventions

Date Format Convention

All dates must follow the next format; dd/mmm/[yy]yy where dd is the day, mmm are the first three letters of the month and [yy]yy is the year. The year should be written with all four digits but, if space is at a premium, the last two digits can be used. A valid date would be then 7/Dec/1941 or 11/Sep/2001.
