Beherman Demoen BDX

Beherman Demoen BDX of the Policía Federal Argentina during May 2004. (Federico Freyre)

In 1976 the Engineering Division of Beherman Demoen obtained a licence to produce an improved version of the Irish Timoney APC, of which 10 had been produced for the Irish government. The total production for the Belgian government was 123, between 1978 and 1981, mostly for internal and base security duties.

This is an interesting vehicle with an all-welded steel armour construction designed for internal security duties. The driver sits in the centre front of the vehicle behind a bulletproof glass viewing screen, and with glass screens on both sides. Behind the driver the engine is placed. There is a hatch in the roof of the troop compartment where a machine gun or a turret can be mounted. The troop compartment can seat 10 soldiers with two doors on each side and one rear of the vehicle. In water the vehicle is amphibious propelled by its wheels, so it can wade rivers where the current is no stronger than 5 km/h. A number of extras do exist starting with the typical assortment of turrets up to the NBC system, smoke grenade dischargers, air-conditioning system, water jets and front-mounted dozer blade.

This Armoured Personnel Carrier is used in Argentina by the Policía Federal Argentina which bought five brand new examples, which ended up being the only success export of this vehicle. Latter, México became an user when the Army started using some former Belgian examples.
