This is a successful weather radar system that uses the colour magenta to indicate areas of heavy rainfall. The RDS-82 a 2 piece Colour Radar System consisting of RS-181A Radar Sensor and IN-182A Radar Indicator. It was designed specifically for use in medium to light twin engine aircraft of turbo jet, turbo prop, or piston engine design. It can detect, locate, and present any enroute weather associated with thunderstorms and high density rainfall in four colour format. Consists of radar sensor with line-of-sight stabilized 10 or 12 inch antenna array. The system provides 190 mile (maximum) avoidance range capability with 12 inch antenna and operates on a frequency of 9,345 MHz (X-band) with a nominal peak of 1 kW. Also, the system can be used, day or night, for ground mapping which permits displaying prominent topographical features in addition to primary weather mapping purpose. The indicator can be expanded to display multifunction digital data such as navigation and radio navigation information, flight log information, and several pages of checklist information. Last but not least, vertical profile versions are available and shows height of weather activity.
Typically used in aircraft like the CASA 212 Aviocar. It is in current use by the Prefectura Naval Argentina (PNA).
