This light utility vehicle fills the gap between Jeeps and light trucks and was designed for high mobility both on and off road. This is the result of a gradual development that started with the civilian FIAT Daily chassis to create the air-transportable (Two fit in a Lockheed C-130 Hercules) FIAT 40 PM and continued to end up with the IVECO 40-10 WM. Driving cab is usually fitted with a soft top, however hard top is also available. Cargo compartment is of all-steel construction. It has folding seats along each side for 10 men. Windscreen can be tilted forward to reduce height.

This chassis form the basis for a family of trucks that range from general utility to troop carrier (10 troops) including ambulance, command, anti-tank weapons carrier (RCL or AT missile), field refueling, mobile workshop, police. It can also be used to tow a light field artillery piece, like the OTO Melara 105 mm Pack Howitzer. Last but not least, the standard truck can accommodate an S-250 container shelter at the rear and various other body configurations are possible.

This truck is being used in Argentina. by the Gendarmería Nacional Argentina (GNA) and the Prefectura Naval Argentina (PNA), where it has slowly been replacing the old Mercedes-Benz Unimog. The main commercial success happened in October 1991, when it was announced that the Canadian Forces had selected the IVECO 40.10 WM (4 × 4) light vehicle as the winner of a competition for the Light Support Vehicle Wheeled (LSVW). It has been replaced in production by the IVECO 40.12 WM and IVECO 40.13 WM.
