This is a surface search and navigation radar in use with U.S.A. Navy minehunters and auxiliaries. It is also used by the USCG and a number of other navies worldwide, as well as sold commercially under the Mariner's Pathfinder brand. This is a modular system of electronics and antennas, with different power levels and operating frequencies. The information is presented in a digitally enhanced 12-inch CRT display. When operating as a surface search radar it can track automatically up to 20 targets. The target information is updated every two seconds. Naval vessels may use it when their pure military radars are in standby, as it does not reveal the presence of a warship.
The AN/SPS-64 radar is operating beyond its expected service life and is increasingly difficult and expensive to support. Currently it takes 74 hours per year of preventive maintenance to operate this radar, for example. A Joint acquisition project with the U.S.A. Navy and with the USCG, called SSR (Surface Search Radar) was undertaken. The end result was the AN/SPS-73(V) radar that is replacing the AN/SPS-64 as well as a number of higher priced U.S.A. Navy radars currently in inventory.
This system used to be operational with the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.
